Calculators
Measure once, buy once.
Three calculators for the questions that decide a piece of furniture: will it go through the door, what size rug it needs, how many it seats. The maths is on every page.
- Will my sofa fit through the door? A sofa usually fits through a door if its depth or its height (whichever is smaller) is less than the door’s clear open width. If neither is, it may still fit tilted, as long as its diagonal depth is smaller… Straight through the doorTilted on its diagonal depthRound the hallway turn Open the sofa fit calculator
- What size rug do I need? For a living room, leave roughly 12 to 18 inches of bare floor around the rug and choose the largest standard size that fits; most living rooms need an 8×10 or 9×12. Under a bed, a queen takes an 8×10 and a… Living room, with your sofaBedroom, by bed sizeDining room, by table size Open the rug size calculator
- How many people fit at my table? Allow about 24 inches of table edge per person (30 for armchairs). A 72×36 inch table seats six, a 48 inch round seats four, a 60 inch round six. Leave at least 36 inches between the table edge and the wall… Seats, comfortable and at a squeezeRound, oval, square or rectangleThe largest table your room takes Open the dining table calculator
How we measure
Inches, rooms in feet
Furniture and doorways are entered in inches and rooms in feet, the way US tape measures and floor plans are marked. Every answer shows the numbers it used.
Half an inch to spare
A sofa only counts as fitting a doorway with half an inch left over for hands and padding. Removing the door from its hinges usually gains about an inch more.
Clearance is part of the size
A table needs 36 inches behind each chair to pull out, 44 where people walk behind; a rug needs a border of bare floor. The room check subtracts both.
Standard sizes first
Rugs are matched to the standard US sizes, from 3×5 to 12×15 feet, and round tables to the usual seating guide. When nothing standard fits, the answer says so.
Need it to fit exactly?
Every Blankspace piece is made to order. Give an advisor your room and your doorway, and we build to both, in the Bay Area or by video.
