Rug size calculator

What size rug do I need?

Most living rooms take an 8×10 or a 9×12 rug: leave 12 to 18 in of bare floor round the edge and keep at least the sofa’s front legs on it. A queen bed takes an 8×10, a king a 9×12, and a dining rug runs 24 in past every edge of the table.

  • Runs past each end of a 84 in sofa, so it anchors the seating rather than floating in front of it.

How to measure

  1. Choose the room. Pick living room, bedroom or dining room.
  2. Measure the room. Measure the length and width of the floor, wall to wall, in feet.
  3. Measure the main piece. Measure the sofa’s width, or note the bed size, or measure the table.
  4. Decide the legs. Choose front legs on the rug, or all legs on.
  5. Read the size. The calculator gives the largest standard size that fits, and the next one down.

The short answer

For a living room, leave roughly 12 to 18 inches of bare floor around the rug and choose the largest standard size that fits; most living rooms need an 8×10 or 9×12. Under a bed, a queen takes an 8×10 and a king a 9×12. Under a dining table, the rug should extend about 24 inches beyond every edge so pulled-out chairs stay on it.

How it works

Living room: the calculator leaves a border of bare floor (12 inches in rooms under 11 feet wide, 18 inches otherwise), then picks the largest standard rug that fits. If you enter your sofa, the rug must run past each end of it (about 6 inches a side with the front legs on, 9 with all legs on).

Bedroom: sizes follow the bed, so the rug shows on each side for your first step in the morning. Dining room: the rug extends 24 inches past every edge of the table, the room a chair needs when pulled out. Standard sizes: 3×5, 4×6, 5×8, 6×9, 8×10, 9×12, 10×14 and 12×15 feet.

Questions people ask

What size rug for a living room?

Most living rooms need an 8×10 or a 9×12. Leave 12 to 18 inches of floor showing around the rug (about 8 to 12 inches in a small room), and make sure at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it.

Should the sofa sit on the rug?

Either all legs on the rug, or just the front legs. All legs on reads most generous and needs a larger rug; front legs on is the common choice. A rug that floats in front of the sofa without touching it tends to look too small.

What size rug goes under a queen bed?

An 8×10 placed sideways, running under the lower two thirds of the bed, leaves about 2 feet of rug on each side. A 9×12 works too in a larger room.

How big should a dining room rug be?

At least 24 inches larger than the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. For a 72×40 inch table that means a rug of about 10 by 7½ feet, so a 9×12 or an 8×10 is the usual choice.

What are standard rug sizes?

Common US sizes are 3×5, 4×6, 5×8, 6×9, 8×10, 9×12, 10×14 and 12×15 feet, plus round rugs of 6, 8 and 10 feet.
