Dining table calculator
How many people fit at my table?
A 72×36 in table seats 6 comfortably, 8 at a squeeze. Allow about 24 in of table edge per person, 30 in for armchairs, and at least 36 in from the table edge to the wall.
Your result
Seats 6 to 8 at a squeeze
- A 72×36 in table gives each diner about 24 in of edge.
- The largest table this room takes with 36 in of clearance is about 96×72 in, or a 72 in round.
- Your table fits with room to pull out chairs.

Side chairs at 24 in of edge each; one at each end once the table is at least 34 in wide.
How to measure
- Pick the shape. Choose rectangle, oval, round or square.
- Measure the table. Measure its length and width, or its diameter.
- Choose the chairs. Side chairs need about 24 in of edge, armchairs 30 in.
- Measure the room. Measure the dining room’s length and width in feet.
- Check the clearance. Allow 36 in behind chairs, 44 in where people walk behind them.
The short answer
Allow about 24 inches of table edge per person (30 for armchairs). A 72×36 inch table seats six, a 48 inch round seats four, a 60 inch round six. Leave at least 36 inches between the table edge and the wall, 42 to 48 where people walk behind seated guests.
How it works
Seats come from table edge: about 24 inches per diner on side chairs, 30 on armchairs, and one at each end once the table is at least 34 inches wide. Round tables follow the usual guide (a 48 inch round seats 4, 60 inch 6, 72 inch 8), since chairs splay at a curve. The squeeze figure allows 2 inches less per person.
The room check subtracts the clearance on every side: 36 inches lets chairs pull out, 42 to 48 lets someone walk behind a seated guest (the calculator uses 44).
Questions people ask
How much space does each person need at a dining table?
About 24 inches of table edge per person, and 30 inches for armchairs or a more generous setting. Around 15 inches of depth per place setting, so a table at least 36 inches wide fits plates on both sides.
What size table seats 6?
A rectangular table about 72 by 36 inches, an oval of similar size, or a round table of about 60 inches.
How much clearance do you need around a dining table?
At least 36 inches from the table edge to the wall or furniture so chairs can pull out; 42 to 48 inches where people need to walk behind seated guests.
How many people fit at a round table?
Divide the circumference by about 24 inches: a 48 inch round seats about 4 to 6 at a squeeze, a 60 inch round 6 to 8, a 72 inch round 8 to 10.
What size table fits my dining room?
Subtract 72 inches (36 inches each side) from each room dimension for a comfortable fit, or 84 to 96 inches where people walk behind chairs. The calculator does this for you.
