Made-to-order vs in-stock furniture: cost, speed, quality and when each makes sense

By the Blankspace design teamUpdated 4 min read

The short answer

Choose made-to-order furniture when you want a specific size, covering or finish and can wait several weeks to a few months; choose in-stock furniture when you need it quickly, want easy returns, or are furnishing a temporary home. Made-to-order usually costs more and is rarely returnable, but fits the room and your taste exactly.

Remember

  1. Made-to-order wins on fit, choice and longevity.
  2. In-stock wins on speed, price and returns.
  3. Made-to-order pieces are usually non-returnable, so measure carefully.
  4. Quick-ship programmes sit in between: fixed options, faster delivery.

When made-to-order makes sense

  • Your room has an awkward size, a bay window or a narrow route in.
  • You want a particular fabric, leather or colour.
  • You plan to keep the piece for many years.
  • You are furnishing a forever home rather than a rental.

When in-stock makes sense

  • You are moving soon and need furniture now.
  • You may move again within a year or two.
  • You want the option to return it.

The middle path: quick ship

Quick-ship programmes hold selected models and coverings ready to deliver in weeks. On Blankspace, look for the Quick Ship mark, or design a fully made-to-order piece in the configurator.

Questions people ask

Is made-to-order furniture better quality?

Not automatically. Made-to-order guarantees fit and choice, not quality; judge the frame, springs, foam and covering. See how to tell quality furniture for the construction details to check.

Why does made-to-order furniture take so long?

Because it is built after you order: materials are cut, sewn and upholstered to your specification, then shipped. Several weeks to a few months is typical.
